It Has Gas!

It was me! No, it was the cattle actually. When people talk about global warming, they usually mention cars, airplanes, and large power plants that burn oil and coal. However, scientists have found that animals can also play a major role in changing our climate. Specifically, farm animals like cows, bulls, and dairy cattle produce a surprisingly large amount of greenhouse gases. Luckily, researchers and farmers have discovered a clever solution that works right inside the stomachs of livestock: special dietary supplements. By adding small amounts of natural or scientific ingredients to what cows eat every day, we are finding a way to fight global warming without taking away the dairy and meat people rely on.

To understand how feed supplements help, it is important to know why cows make greenhouse gases in the first place. Cows are ruminants, which means they have special four-chambered stomachs designed to digest tough plants like grass and hay. Inside the largest part of their stomach, called the rumen, billions of tiny organisms like bacteria work hard to break down fibrous foods. During this fermentation process, these little organisms produce gases. One specific gas created inside the stomach is methane. A cow needs to burp constantly to release that built-up gas. While burping is completely natural for cattle, methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in our atmosphere much more effectively than carbon dioxide. Because there are nearly one billion cattle living on farms across the globe, all those tiny burps add up to a huge problem for earth's climate.

This is where special dietary supplements step in to save the day. Scientists have created compounds and discovered natural plants that interrupt the methane-making process inside the cow’s stomach. One popular additive is a compound called 3-NOP, often sold under the brand name Bovaer. When a cow eats a tiny amount of this supplement mixed into its regular grain, the compound targets and blocks the exact enzyme that microbes use to turn hydrogen into methane gas. The compound safely breaks down into normal substances that the cow simply absorbs, so it does not stay in the cow or affect the milk humans drink! Another exciting discovery is a specific type of red ocean seaweed called Asparagopsis. When farmers mix just a small pinch of dried seaweed into cattle feed, natural chemicals inside the seaweed stop the methane-producing microbes in their tracks.

The results of using these feed additives are remarkable. Studies show that adding 3-NOP to a cow’s diet can cut its methane burps by thirty to forty percent, while the red seaweed can lower methane emissions by up to eighty percent in some farm setups. Decreasing methane is one of the fastest ways to cool down global warming trends because methane disappears from the atmosphere much faster than carbon dioxide. Additionally, cutting down on burping actually helps the cow. When a cow creates methane, it wastes energy that could otherwise go toward making milk or growing healthy muscles. By blocking methane creation, the cow retains more energy from its food.

Even though dietary supplements offer huge benefits, putting them into practice everywhere comes with a few challenges. Farmers must purchase these supplements, which adds costs to running a farm. Scientists are also working on ways to feed supplements to cows that graze freely in huge pastures, since those cattle do not eat from a feed bowl every day where medicine can easily be mixed in.
